What’s better than apple pie? Apple pie that doesn’t require a fork! My Apple Hand Pies with Caramel may seem like a Fall dessert, but our family eats them year round. Not to mention that making these in the air fryer is SO much easier (and faster!) than baking a standard pie.

Desserts are one of my favorite kinds of recipes to make, but I really hate the clean up part. I don’t mind dragging everything out to get started, that’s when it’s still fun. But once the fun is over, it’s time to tackle that stack of dishes (boo!).

Just one more reason I love using my air fryer every chance I get. Typically I use parchment paper liners to line the basket, so there’s barely any clean up involved.

While this apple hand pie recipe makes about 16 pies, you can make smaller batches if needed.

Pie Crusts – we are using store bought from the refrigerated section of the store

Flour – you just need a little for dusting so the dough doesn’t get too sticky

How To Make Apple Hand Pies in the Air Fryer

Remove the pie crusts from the refrigerator and allow them to soften according to the package directions. After the dough has softened, dust your surface with flour and roll the dough out until it’s about ⅛ of an inch thin.

Using a cookie cutter, start cutting out your dough for the pies. Put just enough apple pie filling on one side that you can still fold over the crust. I made 16 pies using a 4″ circle cutter.

Once you have whisked the eggs, use a pastry brush (or your fingers) to coat the dough edges. Fold over to seal the pie and use a fork to crimp the edges. Then cut a few slits in the top of the pies, to allow steam to vent while cooking.

Brush both sides of the crimped pies with the egg wash and add them to your air fryer basket, making sure to leave space between the pies. If you’re using parchment paper liners, place those in the bottom before adding your pies.

Cook for 6 minutes at 330 degrees F and flip half way through.

Serve with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Tips for Making

  • Don’t overload your pies with filling or it will leak out.
  • Make sure pies aren’t touching when you add them to the basket.
  • Sprinkle the tops of the pies with turbinado sugar before cooking for a little extra crunch and sweetness.

Can You Use Real Apples Instead?

You can but you’ll also need to make the “filling” from scratch. If you have home-canned pie filling on hand, you can definitely use that.

For a little more crunch you can dice up some apples and add to the store bought filling. You may need to cook the pies a little longer if you use fresh apples.

Serving Suggestions

After you have cooked your pies and they’ve cooled, serve with some of our favorite toppings:

  • drizzle with a simple glaze of confectioners sugar and milk
  • serve with a caramel dipping sauce
  • serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • dust with powdered sugar

Can You Freeze Apple Hand Pies?

Yes! After they have cooled, wrap them in plastic wrap or tin foil and place them in a freezer friendly container or bag.

To reheat, thaw the pies overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat in the air fryer at 325 for 3-4 minutes or in the microwave for 30 second intervals until heated through.
